Why you and why now?

Goshen is my community, and I started my career at GCS. I have watched as our kids are losing ground with academics. If we want to have students who will be successful adults and stay here and start businesses, we have to offer them more than sports and band. We are stellar in those programs but failing miserably in academics. If we lined up 10 students, the fact is that 6 of the 10 can’t read and can’t do math at proficient levels. No parent wants their child to be one of the 6 that is underperforming.

At Goshen Community Schools, as a percentage:

Only these kids

I have teacher experience. We need a teacher on the board. How can a group of businesspeople make decisions for over 6,000 students, their parents and our teachers if they have never worked in a classroom? I have a great deal of administrative and board experience. A board member has no authority on his/her own and has to work in tandem to get things accomplished for all the stakeholders. I know how to find the best teachers and know how to retain them as well. I know how to research and choose curriculum and not just listen to a sales presentation. I know the importance of researching everything before I vote.
We have to stop spending money. We have spent money on large scale building. projects. Buildings do not educate students, teachers do. Let’s let our teachers know we are glad they chose GCS to fulfill their calling. Let’s find out why over 35 teachers have left, many to other corporations. Let’s stop building monuments for the sake of egos and focus on how our kids and teachers can be successful. We are administratively top heavy. Let’s take some of that money and give to the students and the teachers. Let’s get some tutors and some special helps for students who need help. Teacher burnout is at a high all over the country. It is exhausting to keep the pendulum swinging to try different things. Lets find one and make it successful. We know what works. We have to quit depending on textbook companies to sell us on the newest and greatest.
Our schools are not safe. We almost lost 3 students a year or so ago because of drugs in the bathroom. Teachers have reported that they can’t walk down certain halls and take a breath for fear of getting high. Kids are bullied. All parents, teachers and community expect our students to be safe.
